Romantics in Kedron looking for ways to sweeten Valentine’s Day with their loved ones can celebrate at the newly-opened Miss Sophia Gelateria. A cone or cup of gelato will surely satiate the sweet cravings, if not relieve you from the uncomfortably afternoon heat.
Miss Sophia Gelateria offers classic favourites like Caffe Latte, Blueberry Yoghurt, and Pistachio. It also has unique flavours like Toasted Coconut and Strawberry Pavlova.
The menu also has vegan and gluten-free ice cream choices. Sometime in March, the gelateria will be introducing sugar-free flavours as well.
Diners can choose from three cup sizes: piccolo, medio and grande. The waffle cones, on the other hand, are available in gluten-free variant and if you’d like more indulgence, you can top up your gelato with homemade biscuits or chocolate sprinkles.

Most of the ice cream ingredients come from local farmers and producers like Tommerups Dairy Farm. The mangoes and macadamia come from crops grown in Queensland.
Miss Sophia Gelateria is located at the former site of Farmer Joe’s Fruit Market. Locals may fondly recall this place as a produce store managed by an Italian family ten years ago.

The new gelato store brings special recognition to this corner’s Italian roots. Miss Sophia Gelateria, however, is owned and managed by the Scott family, who has other foodie shops in Brisbane, such as the Continental Cafe in Fortitude Valley and the Milk Cafe in Ashgrove.
The detailed design for the $53-million Northern Transitway from Kedron to Chermside is underway, with the final design expected to be delivered in mid-2019.
The project is being touted as a cost-efficient solution to support high-frequency bus services along Gympie Arterial Road. The project is part of the government’s effort to encourage more people to use public transport, thereby decongesting the roads.
Starting from Sadlier Street in Kedron to Hamilton Road in Chermside, the Northern Transitway will be a 2.3-km public transport corridor delivering targeted bus priority.

a safer and more efficient public transport system for northern Brisbane customers, by separating buses from general traffic
improved and more reliable travel times along the corridor for bus customers
a facility to support high-frequency bus services, encouraging more people to use public transport
greater capacity on the public transport system
assist in managing congestion along the corridor and broader northern Brisbane transport network
improvements to footpaths along some sections of the alignment, improving pedestrian capacity and safety
an average of 88 direct jobs over the life of the project.
The Queensland Government will shoulder the cost of the project as part of its Passenger Transport Infrastructure Investment Program. This program targets critical infrastructure to build a connected and integrated network that will make public transportation the commuting choice of residents.
Community consultation will happen in early 2019 and construction is expected to start in early 2020.

With $4-million funding from the Education Department, Kedron State School is set to get a new three-storey learning centre.
With this new learning centre, Kedron Tree House, the school will be able to increase its capacity as more students are expected to enrol in the school in the coming years.
Aside from the “tree house”, the multi-million allocation will also cover the cost of a covered link between the new building and the school, a new hire building to decant classes, the removal of existing temporary hire buildings on the oval and tennis courts, and the refurbishment of current facilities.

Initial prep work that will facilitate the construction of the new building has already started in the early weeks of August 2018. Once the proposed design for the Kedron Tree House is approved, full-scale construction is set to begin later in the year.
Preparations for the construction site will include removal of three classrooms at the end of the term. With this, classes will be relocated to a temporary classroom located on the school tennis court and tennis coaching lessons will be conducted at the local tennis courts a short walk from school.
The Kedron Tree House is anticipated to be completed by 2020.
Preparing for 2020
Kedron State School is not the only one getting an upgrade in preparation for 2020. Kedron State High receives $5.1 million funding under the government’s “2020 Ready” Program. The funds will be used to to build a new two-storey learning centre with additional classrooms, a union kitchen, and an industrial kitchen.
Despite a couple of objections for the development, the Council has approved the proposal submitted by AAD Design for a mixed-use development which includes a new childcare centre, multiple dwellings, and a cafe at 26, 28 & 30 Lawley Street and Gallagher Terrace, Kedron.

The seven-storey development was designed by Regional Design Studio to have a childcare centre, thirty medium density apartments, and a food and drink outlet.

The development was initially objected to by some residents who raised their concerns regarding traffic safety for current and future road users. The number of cars that would probably park along the road was cited as an issue. In response, the plans included basement parking provisions for 40 resident car parks, five for visitors, 16 for childcare use, one for PWD and one for a van.

The childcare centre is set to accommodate up to 80 children and will have two outdoor play areas. Positioned on the ground floor, the indoor area consists of a reception area, group rooms, changing facilities, a sleeping room, and a kitchen. Once completed, the child care centre will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays.
Possible transport projects aimed at improving daily travel for Queenslanders, including Kedron commuters, were announced recently. The strategies envisioned less congested roads and a faster commute.
Labor pledged $75 million for projects involving the Northern and Eastern Transitways if re-elected. Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Jackie Trad explained that the transitways would cut the travel time among commuters, adding that Labor would see to it that bus lanes will operate uninterrupted from Kedron to Chermside bus station.
Meanwhile, the Queensland’s Department of Transport and Main Roads published its Western Brisbane Transport Network Strategy Projects on 13th of November. Four of the proposals involved busways in Herston to Kedron, Kedron to Aspley, Kedron to CBD, and Everton Park to Kedron.
Project 1 Herston to Kedron – Northern Busway
This project should connect the Inner Northern Busway at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Herston to Kedron with a bus-only corridor, following the Lutwyche Road. It is expected to cut the existing average bus travel time into half.
Construction of the Airport Link is ongoing on the three-kilometre section of the Northern Busway between Windsor and Kedron.
Project 4 Kedron to Aspley – Northern Busway
Under this project, the Kedron Northern Busway will be extended along Gympie Road to Aspley by constructing bus lanes from the end of the busway at Kedron within the Gympie Road corridor. This section would eventually be upgraded to busway standard.
Project 5 Kedron to CBD
Under this project, a high-quality cycleway will be built, providing a direct and continuous route from the Kedron Brook cycle way through to the CBD.

The Kedron High RSL Liaison Prefects is calling the community to help them find former or current Kedron State High School students or staff who served as part of the Australian Defence Force during military campaigns.
The prefects want the names of all Kedron State High School servicemen and women to be included on the new Honour Board for the state high school, in preparation of the Anzac Day celebration in 2018.

The people that are being searched for could have worked or may still be working as cleaners, groundsmen, office workers, teachers, principals, and other related jobs at Kedron State High School and other places after their stint at Kedron.
The Honour Board is the brainchild of a 17-year-old Kedron State High School student, Ryan Malone. It has also been his idea that the board be ready in time for the Anzac Day 2018. With the Honour Board, he wants to pay tribute to the ex-service people who attended his school, apart from being remembered twice a year.
Kedron State High School opened in 1956. Malone initially thought that there only be staff or former students who served during the Vietnam War on the Board. As of press time however, names that have been submitted for the board extend to those who served in World War II, Afghanistan, and the Malayan conflict.

To make the Honour Board ready for next year, he contacted RSL Liaison Prefect Claudia Watson from the Kedron-Wavell RSL Sub Branch for help. The latter then started its community-wide campaign, asking everyone for help.
In the event that enough names are gathered before the Anzac Day 2018, the Honour Board will be unveiled on the same day. However, the search for the servicemen will continue until all possible names have turned up.
Military service seems to have captured Malone’s heart entirely. The young man dreams of joining the reserves after graduating from college.

Meanwhile, the Kedron-Wavell RSL Sub Branch is also inviting servicewomen who served in World War II, the Land Army, post-WWII, or those who are currently serving the Defence. These women are being invited to be a member of the Kedron-Wavell Ex-Servicewomen’s Association, which ultimate goal is to continue and preserve the history of Women’s Defence Service.
