How Repair Cafe Workshops Foster Community Connections

At Repair Cafe Stafford, the focus isn’t just on fixing broken items—it’s about fostering connections. The free workshops aim to reduce waste, build skills, and strengthen community bonds along the way.

Run by volunteers, the community workshops aim to reduce waste and costs by reviving damaged and dysfunctional belongings. At each workshop, people can bring in anything from faulty electrical appliances to ripped clothing to be assessed and repaired with the help of volunteers.

The Repair Cafe provides the workspace, tools, and materials. Attendees learn handy repair skills in the process, building self-reliance and contributing to a circular economy.

For many volunteers, the sessions often lead to meaningful conversations and connections. There’s a real spirit of collaboration. People chat whilst working on projects and end up making new friends.

The workshops also provide an opportunity for knowledge transfer between generations. Jon, one of the young volunteers, enjoys learning from the experienced helpers, many of whom are retirees with a lifetime of practical expertise.

One of those were Roy, who once worked for hours to repair a set of antique drawers, carefully measuring and cutting, reconstructing the deteriorated runners so the drawers could slide properly again. It was only after they were successfully mended that their long history was revealed.

The English oak dresser was a wedding gift to the current owner Jennifer’s great-grandmother in 1901. It immigrated with the family from England to South Africa in 1911, passing down through generations of women. When Jennifer moved to Australia, the heirloom made the journey too.

Jennifer was so appreciative she wrote Roy a thank-you letter. Roy admits had he known the drawers’ provenance, he would have been more nervous about repairing the 130-year-old treasure.

Stories like this are common at the workshops, where strangers collaborate to fix sentimental possessions—and end up fixing connections within the community too.

More Workshops in 2024

Due to an overwhelming response from the community, the Repair Cafe workshops in Stafford will be held more frequently starting in the new year, giving locals more chances to join together and mend their damaged possessions.

The organisation heard fascinating stories behind items brought in for repair, including 130-year-old wooden drawers that had travelled from England to South Africa to Australia. They sharpened an antique pair of nursing scissors and partially fixed a musical box silent for over 40 years.

Stark Reminder of Road Safety: Police Arrest Man for Reckless Riding & Drug Influence in Stafford

A recent incident in Stafford served as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by reckless behaviour on the roads as Queensland Road Safety Week concluded.

On the evening of Thursday, 24 Aug 2023, at approximately 4:40 pm, the police were alarmed by the sight of an unregistered motorbike being ridden at high speeds along Webster Road in Stafford. The rider was conspicuously not wearing a helmet, raising immediate concerns about his safety and the potential danger posed to others on the road.

Responding swiftly, the police initiated patrols to locate the individual. Ultimately, the man was spotted standing alongside the motorbike on Heilbromm Street in Stafford Heights. Subsequent investigations conducted by the authorities unveiled a series of alarming revelations about the rider’s behaviour.

In a disturbing turn of events, it was discovered that the motorbike operator was not only unlicensed but also allegedly under the influence of drugs. These findings led to the apprehension and arrest of a 19-year-old Chermside man, who now faces a litany of charges.

The man was booked for driving under the influence of liquor or a drug, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, driving without a license, failing to wear a motorbike helmet, and possessing tainted property. The accused is slated to appear before the Brisbane Magistrates Court on 27 Sept 2023.

Authorities emphasize that the ramifications of the rider’s thoughtless decisions could have been far graver. Motorcycle riders represent one of the most vulnerable groups of road users, and statistics from Queensland highlight a concerning trend of increasing motorcycle fatalities.

Due to the inherent lack of protection offered by motorcycles compared to other vehicles, riders are at an elevated risk of severe injury or worse in the event of a collision.

Law enforcement agencies and safety advocates stress the importance of motorists remaining acutely cautious and vigilant regarding motorcycle riders. This involves actively scanning for riders, checking blind spots, using indicators when changing lanes or making turns, adhering to road rules, and exercising additional prudence during adverse weather conditions.

For those who might have pertinent information related to this incident or any other criminal activities, authorities urge them to reach out to Policelink. Information can be submitted through the online suspicious activity form available 24 hours a day at www.police.qld.gov.au/reporting or by calling 131 444. They can also contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000 or submit information online at www.crimestoppersqld.com.au.

Community Launches Campaign to Regain Stafford Bowls Club

Concerned locals are planning to regain community ownership and use of the Stafford Bowls Club after its lease was transferred, allegedly without proper consultation, to the Brisbane Racing Club.

On Facebook, about 70 locals formed the “Stafford Community Hub not Race Club” to work on cancelling the lease granted to the commercial racing club. The group also created an online petition for the same purpose.

Brisbane Racing Club (BRC) apparently plans to refurbish Stafford Bowls Club with a new dining area, a cafe, a sports bar, and a gaming room with 80 pokies. The design and details have yet to be released.

But Anna, one of the more active members of the group, said that the Stafford and Kedron communities do not want the bowls club to become a commercial entity, citing that the locals would greatly benefit from a hub similar to Grange or the revitalised Moorooka Bowls Club.

The Stafford Bowls Club has been closed since 2016 and residents have waited for the site’s redevelopment into a family-friendly hub. Crushers Leagues Club lodged a development application for this redevelopment and even secured a 20-year lease extension in 2019.

However, Crushers Leagues Club could not proceed with the lease due to its licensing issues. Thus, Council apparently decided to turn over the lease to BRC “without debate, and without community support or input,” the petition stated.

“The community was not privy to the decision, nor consulted on what they would like or need for their community.”

As part of their campaign, the Stafford Community Hub not Race Club will gather at Gibson Park on Sunday, the 18th of December 2022 at 10:30 a.m., to discuss their visions for the community. A fundraiser has also been opened to help with the campaign.

Stafford Tavern Lodges Major Redevelopment Plans

Stafford Tavern, located on Webster and Billabong Roads, is gearing up for a major redevelopment that will include a new gaming lounge and modern upgrades to elevate its status as a four-star motel.

Sun Tavern Pty Ltd lodged DA A006052304 in July 2022, outlining plans for a massive makeover that will take place in two stages. The plans include the demolition of the current outdoor dining spot and garden area to create a new outdoor space and the gaming lounge with a bar.

The current gaming lounge will be transformed into function rooms, albeit temporarily until the second stage of construction.

The owners of Stafford want a stylish facade and a bigger landscaped outdoor courtyard for the hotel guests. The old playground for the children will be near the courtyard so parents can conveniently watch over their kids.

Stage 2:

  • Three levels of accommodation of ‘4-star’ quality is developed over and along the south side of the tavern building complex, including the provision of increased car parking provision, porte-cochere for the motel and a slip lane to maintain bottle shop drive-thru.
  • Development is maintained within existing property boundaries and with no proposed alteration to site ingress or egress.
  • The scale of the accommodation building is no greater than 15 meters height above the natural ground line.
  • Orientation of long axis of the accommodation building in the north/south to minimise heat load on the building.

The hotel plans include adding 43 rooms across three levels, which will be built in the southern side of the property. Stafford Tavern will also have a rooftop space with a bar lounge, a terrace, and an indoor meeting room.
